  • Art Room 109 – Child Safeguarding Policy

    1. Introduction

Art Room 109 is committed to providing a safe, inclusive, and creative environment for children participating in our arts programmes. We recognise our duty to protect children from harm and ensure their well-being while engaging in our workshops, classes, and events.

This policy outlines the measures we take to safeguard children and is informed by the Children First Act 2015, Children First: National Guidance, and the Tusla Child Protection and Welfare Policy.

    2. Principles of Child Protection

    We are committed to:

    • Ensuring a child-centred approach where all children are treated with dignity, respect, and fairness.

    • Recognising that all children have the right to protection from harm, abuse, and neglect.

    • Promoting a safe and supportive creative learning environment.

    • Ensuring that all staff and volunteers comply with national child protection legislation.

    • Reporting concerns about child welfare to the appropriate authorities.

    3. Risk Assessment & Prevention

To minimise potential risks to children, we take the following steps:

    • Safe Recruitment: All facilitators, artists, and volunteers working with Art Room 109 must undergo Garda Vetting.

    • Code of Conduct: All staff must adhere to best practices, including appropriate communication, supervision, and professional boundaries.

    • Safe Spaces: Workshops are designed to take place in safe, age-appropriate, and supervised environments.

    • One-to-One Contact: Where possible, one-on-one interactions with children are avoided. If necessary, they occur in open, observable spaces with parental or staff supervision.

    • Parental Involvement: Parents/guardians are encouraged to participate and are always informed about their child’s involvement in activities.

    4. Reporting Concerns

Art Room 109 follows the reporting obligations outlined in Children First: National Guidance.

    • Any concerns regarding child protection or welfare must be reported to the Designated Liaison Person (DLP), who will assess the situation and, if necessary, make a report to Tusla – Child and Family Agency.

    • All suspicions or disclosures of abuse are treated seriously and documented securely.

    • Art Room 109 ensures full cooperation with Tusla and An Garda Síochána in any investigation.

    5. Training & Awareness

    • All facilitators are required to complete the Tusla eLearning module on Children First and remain updated on child protection policies.

    • Regular child safeguarding training sessions are provided to ensure staff understand their roles and responsibilities.

    6. Confidentiality & Record-Keeping

    • All child protection concerns are handled with strict confidentiality.

    • Records are kept securely in line with GDPR and data protection regulations.

    7. Review & Compliance

    • This policy is reviewed annually to ensure ongoing compliance with legislation and best practices.

    • A self-audit will be completed as required by the Arts Council’s Child Protection Framework.
